Looking into your pediatric dentistry options? Parents have choices when it comes to choosing a dental professional to provide dental services for their children. Since children need to be seen by a dentist by the age of 12 months, parents need to be sure to choose the right type of dentist for their children.

About pediatric dentists

While many parents choose to take their child to see a general dentist for dental-related services, general dentists have not undergone the additional education that allows them to understand the specific dental needs of both children and teenagers. According to the American Dental Association, they have the experience and qualifications to care for a child’s teeth, gums, and mouth throughout the various stages of childhood.

While root canals are not a dental procedure that is commonly performed on children, root canal therapy is necessary for some children in order to improve their oral health.

Root canals for children

Root canals are performed in order to fix a tooth that is either inflamed or infected. The procedure requires a dentist to remove the pulp from the problem tooth using special tools and takes about 30 to 45 minutes to complete. Once the tooth is clean, a special dental filling is inserted where the pulp previously was, saving the tooth from additional problems. A dental crown is often placed over the treated tooth in order to provide the tooth with enough strength to fully function once again.

Why would a child need a root canal? There are a few different reasons why a pediatric dentist would mention to parents that their child would benefit from undergoing root canal therapy. These reasons include, but are not limited to, a child experiencing nighttime pain, constant toothaches, sensitivity to cold and hot drinks or foods, has redness and/or swelling around any teeth or is living with extensive tooth decay on one or more of their teeth.

Since most people have heard stories about how painful a root canal could be, there are many misconceptions about root canals. One of these misconceptions is that they are very painful, but in fact, they are not. This is because dentists will provide their patients with local anesthesia that ensures root canal patients will not experience any pain during the procedure. After the procedure, there may be some minor discomfort for a day or two until the area heals.

Are you looking for a pediatric dentist for your child?

Parents who are looking for a dentist who has been specifically trained in providing dental services for children often do so because they feel this type of dental professional is one that will be a great choice. Because pediatric dentists know how to deal with children, when kids are in need of specific types of dental treatment (like root canals) parents can rest assured the treatment will be performed in a manner that supports a child’s good oral health.
