It is important to find the right pediatric dentist for your family. Doing so after having a child is wise because children should start dental care early. Many parents make the mistake of thinking that a child does not need to visit the dentist until they are an older, in elementary school, and start receiving their permanent teeth. This is typically due to the common misconception that baby teeth do not matter since they are going to fall out anyway.
In reality, a child’s baby teeth are incredibly important to the development of proper speech patterns, ability to eat and for self-confidence. Baby teeth are just as susceptible to cavities or infection as adult teeth. Thus, it is necessary to care for the baby teeth by brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, being careful with diet and visiting the dentist at least twice a year.
Services offered by a pediatric dentist
We are a full-service dental office and offer a variety of services to help our patients maintain or improve their oral health. Our services include:
#1. Teeth cleanings and examinations
Cleaning a child’s teeth twice per year is the best way to reduce the risk of them developing tooth decay. This is because plaque and tartar can remain on the teeth even after brushing and flossing. By cleaning the teeth on a regular basis, we can remove the plaque that is likely to contribute to the formation of decay. During the exam, we can also identify signs of dental damage or infections and provide immediate care to solve those issues, as well.
#2. Dental restorations
It is common for children to crack or chip a tooth while playing outside. Even playing tag in the backyard can lead to dental damage. In this scenario, we can restore the truth even if it is a baby tooth. We will restore the damaged tooth using tooth-colored bonding material. We can shape the material in place and then harden it so that a child’s tooth will function as normal and still maintain a natural appearance.
#3. Root canals
While children may require root canals from time to time, adults are mainly the ones who we use root canals for.
#4. Dental crowns
When a tooth has suffered a great deal of damage or a portion of it has been lost to decay, dental crowns are a popular restoration solution. A crown is a cap that surrounds the tooth entirely, making it possible to bite down, eat and speak without experiencing discomfort. It also prevents a tooth from needing to be extracted.
We always recommend that children wear a guard when playing sports to prevent injury.
